The Jacob Center was founded in 1988 by three social workers:  Herb Miller, Ardith Ervin, and John Carlson.  Jacob, a family name among the founders, is historically associated with healing and refers to a very early surveying instrument (a Jacob Staff) whereby people could get their bearings.  The Jacob Center started in Fort Collins.  Since 1988 the Jacob Center has experienced considerable growth and expansion.  Over the years the Jacob Center has expanded into Greeley, Denver, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, Rifle, Boulder, and Longmont.  With these expansions, different programs developed in the areas of electronic monitoring, mentor programs emancipation programs, teen mother programs, and offense specific programs.  Currently, there are three main offices in Fort Collins, Greeley, and Longmont with services mainly focusing on the front range.  Professionals and community residents comprise the Board of Directors for Jacob Family Services.

The original Jacob's staff was actually a surveying instrument developed in the 1300's that was used in making nautical and astronomical measurements.

The JACOB CENTER is a "Good Place for a Change" and where people can get their bearings and a new direction.
